NfC Offseason Grades

NFC EAST

Giants: B+: I know Eli Apple was a bit of a reach I get it. But the kid has height, length, and speed, and if he is coached up he could be a star. Sterling Shepard was a great pick in the 2nd round and will be a nice complement to Odell. Darian Thompson is a ball hawk safety out of Boise State, Always makes plays LB B.J. Goodson out of clemson, Quick running back Paul Perkins out of UCLA, a steal, and Jerell Adams , a 2nd round talent TE out of South Carolina in the 6th round. Great day 2 and 3 and overall very good draft. Now to free agency. The Giants went all in and spent 200 million on 4 players that all upgrade their defense. They needed pass rushers to get to the quarterback so they resigned JPP for a one year prove it deal and Oliver Vernon to a huge deal, who is a star rusher. They also signed Damon Harrison to go along with Jonathan Hankins. This is starting to look like a scary front four. Add in janoris Jenkins to DRC in the secondary and this defense is starting to come together. The reason this isn’t an A is because they over paid in free agency. But it was needed because the defense was putrid. I really liked what they did.

Cowboys: B-: I love ezekiel elliot and charles tapper but that’s about it. They had both of the linebackers with knee problems, they took Jaylon Smith but I would have taken Jack. Smith is a risk because he has nerve damage and might never play again. Maliek Collins has the potential but his tape was poor. Dak Prescott over Cardale Jones was a head scratcher to me. Free agency they didn’t do much. Alfred Morris, there new backup running back was a good pickup and Cedric Thornton is underrated but they need pass rushers because Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence are suspended. Like Zeke a lot everything else was eh.

Eagles C+: Some of this is because they had so few picks. Some of it is I don’t love Wentz while I am on the Goff Bandwagon. The Eagles are all in on a guy who might be great or might bust. Free agency, I like what they did. Guys like Rodney McLeod and Brandon brooks are solid additions and Nigel bradham. But what they did with their quarterbacks was downright stupid. They wrapped up so much cap space in 2 quarterbacks and then traded up to get wentz. Fine, if your going to trade up for wentz then sign Daniel as a guy to start for a year before wentz takes over. But don’t also give Bradford a huge deal and sign Daniel to descent deal AND give away 2 first round picks for wentz. Just stupid.

Redskins: B+: Josh Doctson is a great player but the need wasn’t great, but no matter what the skins get a solid player. The redskins also get a great football player in Su’a Cravens and another good football player in Kendall fuller. Redskins, for the second year in a row, get lots of good football players. Free agency wasn’t splashy until the last minute. They tagged cousins and that was the right decision since he has only done it for 1 year. Make him prove it and then give him the money.  Then the panthers shock everyone and pull the tag from pro bowl corner josh Norman and the redskins were one of many to call. They gave him a huge contract which might have been necessary since there secondary was the teams biggest weakness. In my opinion, Norman is a system corner instead of a shutdown corner and was a product of his system in Carolina. Anyway, I give them a B+. Get your popcorn ready for beckham vs Norman twice a year.

NFC SOUTH

Panthers: C: They really didn’t do much. Drafted a lot of corners I didn’t like with reaches. But I do like Vernon Butler a lot. In free agency, they didn’t do anything except pull Normans tag which made big headlines. But it was the right thing to do because they decided who their core players were, and Norman just wasn’t one of them. It was a very Carolina offseason.

Saints: B: I really like their first three picks. Rankins was a little early for me but he fills a huge need. Michael Thomas is a possession receiver who Brees will love. Vonn Bell was a steal at the end of round 2. Quantity was why they didn’t have a higher grade. In free agency, they were another team that didn’t do much. They signed nick fairley and James laurinaitis, two veterans who will improve the defense. Solid offseason for the saints.

Falcons: D: What are they doing? They reach on a safety In Keanu Neal in round one and picked a player in LB Deion Jones in round 2 who ran 4.59 but plays slower who also has bad instincts. Just Terrible. I liked hooper in round three, the TE out of Stanford but it just wasn’t a good draft. Free agency, the headlines were Alex Mack and Mohammad Sanu. Both good pickups that filled needs but might’ve over paid for both.

buccaneers- B: The Tampa bay Buccaneers was a very controversial one. They drafted Vernon Hargreaves in the first round, good pick fills a position of need I am fine with it. Noah spence in the second was a solid gamble that was worth the risk because he was a first round talent with off the field issues. Then they traded up in the bottom of the second to get kicker Robert aguayo from Florida state. He is a great kicker and a need for the Bucs so I was like ok fine. There draft was a productive one but nothing jumped off the screen and said wow Great pick. Free agency was kind of like that also. They resigned Doug Martin to a nice deal after a very good year. Solid. Robert ayers was productive for the Giants and they needed pass rush help so they signed him. Solid. They added Brent grimes for help in the secondary. Solid. There offseason to me was one word. Solid.

NFC NORTH

Bears- A: I loved what the Bears did in the draft and I liked what they did in free agency. That combines to an A offseason. In the draft, they traded up in front of my giants, which I am still mad about, and drafted rusher Leonard Floyd. Good player with big potential who has all the tools to be great. In the second round, they got a very solid guard in Cody whitehair who can help protect cutler. In the third round they drafted  Jonathan bullard. A productive player who has a great motor, I had a first round grade on him and he was a steal. Amazing draft. Free agency was also good. They picked up Danny trevathan and jarell freeman, two linebackers with speed that can really improve there defense. This was a great offseason for the Bears. They lost Matt forte who I and many Bears fans loved and respected but except that, I loved their offseason.

Packers- B-: I gave the packers a b- and here is why. Free agency was a packers free agency. Didn’t do much and let everyone else overpay. Have you ever noticed the best teams never do much in free agency? But they lost Casey Hayward, And that’s a tough blow. Draft was another successful one with Kenny Clark and Jason spriggs both being good picks. Solid offseason.

Lions- C+: they had a draft that was successful in my opinion. They got bigger upfront and that’s exactly what they needed. I like Taylor decker a lot and I thought that was a good pick. A’shawn Robinson wasn’t my favorite player in the draft but a good value in the draft. The reason they got a low grade was the loss of Calvin Johnson. Sure, they signed marvin jones but he is no megaton. He will be missed.

Vikings: B-: the Vikings were a team that quietly went along in the draft and were very solid. Treadwell was a good first round pick and will be the go to guy for bridgewater, they got secondary help in the second round with Alexander and made everyone feel good with boeringer in the 6th round. They signed Alex Boone in free agency but not much else. They look like a super bowl contender.

NFC West

Cardinals:B: chandler jones was the highlight of offseason. They packaged ex first round pick Jonathon copper and a second round pick for pro bowl rusher chandler jones. They needed a guy to be their go to pass rusher and they got him. Then they got a high risk very high reward in Robert nkemdiche who was a steal. The rest of their draft was just a bunch of guys and free agency was quiet but those two players were enough to give them a solid grade.

Seahawks: B: they had a very good draft with Ifedi, Reed, and prosise were all good picks that filled needs. Very good draft. Not much in free agency that they did but they did lose okung. Overall I give it a b.

Rams: A: they had one goal going into the offseason. Get the franchise quarterback. I love Goff and since they got him, I have to give them an A.

49ers: B: they did not do much in free agency. But in the draft they took guys in the trenches like Joshua Garnett and deforest Buckner. They are rebuilding the team from the inside out and they used this draft to go back to being tough up front.
