Quarterback #4 NFL DRAFT 2017

Brad Kaaya

6’4 216LBS

University of Miami

Strengths

Brad Kaaya is a guy who has good size for the Position. He doesn’t have great muscle tone but he is a legit 6’4, the prototypical height for a quarterback. He is a smart quarterback who will take what the defense gives him and makes little mistakes. He also shows good poise. He is a guy who is never panicked and also seems to be calm. He is a very fundamentally sound quarterback who has a good throwing motion and very good footwork. He does a good job of going through his progressions and finding the open man. He was under tremendous pressure at Miami but when he did have time, he was very accurate. A boost for his stock could be the fact that he likes to stay in the pocket and be a stereotypical QB. He has also shown very good accuracy and touch on fade and back shoulder routes. Lastly, in games like vs Florida State and vs West Virginia, he is a quarterback that can get really hot and be nearly impossible to stop.

Weaknesses

He is a QB that is not a risk taker which can be looked at as a positive, but on the flip side he doesn’t take enough shots down the field and when I watch him, I see him check down way too often. He also cannot avoid defenders and extend plays because he has little lateral quickness. He has shown flashes, but both his deep ball accuracy and his ability to throw receivers open are inconsistent. He is a player that is very fundamental but he has little playmaking/innovative skills that Modern NFL QB’s have.  At times he also seems to aim the ball instead of just throwing it and when that happens, he throws low. At times he seems to teleport passes, even though he has solid field vision. He will go into the play knowing who he is throwing to instead of reading the defense and finding the open man.

Overall: I think Kaaya has the potential to be an Alex Smith type of QB. He can be a good game manager who makes some plays but never strings explosive plays together consistently and is much more comfortable with checkdown passes. A guy who is very fundamentally sound but seems a little stiff in terms of pocket mobility and ability to make plays.
