This sports offseason, what I call baseball season, has been very slow. Nothing has happened so I have dived into watching movies. Baby Driver is in theaters, and with all the hype surrounding it I decided to see it. It had a 95 Rotten tomatoes, higher then Shawshank Redemption and The Breakfast Club, so I just had to see it. I had such high expectations. And let me tell you. It sucked. Like really sucked. Like walk out of the theatre mid movie sucked. And here’s why.

I think it boils down to one thing. Lack of character development throughout the movie with every character. It has an intriguing plot, a young man named Baby whose trapped in a life of being a getaway driver to pay back a debt to Doc played by Kevin Spacey. I love Ansel Elgort, don’t get me wrong, but his character Baby was boring and not well developed. All we know about him is he is a good driver, he loves music, and he takes care of his old foster father. And the reoccurring flashback of the car crash that killed his parents. Maybe that’s why he loves to drive, because that’s how he lost his parents in a weird twist, but it is never explained. He never talks, and the lack of dialogue makes you bored throughout the story. The soundtrack wasn’t even good. They tried to blend music with car racing action and it simply did not work. Then their is the whole relationship between Baby and Deborah. It’s absurd and hard to believe. Deborah is not developed at all, all we know is she shares an interest in music and has this dream of hitting the road with no destination. She knows nothing about Baby, and they only meet a few times, but this leads to an “epic romance” that the movie was clearly pushing for, but didn’t put the time in to develop. And he commits crimes in front of her and then she leaves with him, making everyone eye roll because that is so unrealistic. That relationship was pushed and clearly never worked. And the other main stars, Kevin Spacey, John Hamm and Jamie Foxx, all sucked. They all tried to be funny, but weren’t. Everything was touched on but never explained, and nothing seemed to add up or was believable. Overall, it’s a horrible movie with it’s only good feature being the cool car chases. It’s ridiculously overrated and media hype driven, and I would like to personally talk to Rotten Tomatoes to see how they came to this conclusion.
