Coming into the season, the Giants had sky high expectations. Super bowl expectations. But instead, they are a total joke. They are 0-5 and are the worst team in New York and maybe the NFL. Their franchise player got hurt. Everything is falling apart. I’m gonna tell you how we got here.
Going into the year, it was easy to see why everyone was excited for the season. The Giants were coming off an 11-5 season, they brought everyone back, and they added Brandon Marshall and Evan engram. The defense was loaded. Eli had a ton of weapons. So what went wrong? I think it comes down to three things. Poor construction of the roster, play calling and design, and execution. Someone once told me whenever you are designing an NFL roster build from the inside out. Get the QB, offensive line, and defensive line first and work your way out. But the Giants completely ignored that. Despite having a good year last year (arguably because they did have a VERY easy schedule) they regressed heavily on the offensive end. It was Odell or bust, and the o-line was miserable. Instead of addressing it, the front office got cocky and ignorant. They believed Ereck flowers could turn it around because they thought he would be good, despite clearly being a bust. They tried to cover up their mistakes by throwing money at shiny new toys. And it just didn’t work. Of course it didn’t work. They can’t run the ball, eli has no time to throw, and the defense is underperforming because they are on the field all the time. The construction of the team is totally flaud and we all should have seen it coming.
This NFL season has really taught me a lot. The more things Change in the NFL, the more things stay the same. The more we try to get away from running the ball and having dominant lines, the more the evidence points to the fact that it is what works. The Giants thought they were the patriots. Who needs to run the ball, why not just pass it every play. But that doesn’t work. Balance is important. Play design and cleverness is important. Creativity is important. This helps me get to another point. Ben Mcadoo should be fired today. People will point to the fact that he made the playoffs last year and he should be given more time. But the cold, ugly truth is he is a joke. He isn’t ready. And the truth is the Giants made the playoffs despite him, not because of him. He is supposed to be an offensive minded coach but the offense is getting worse and the creativity within the offense is laughable. I can watch the games on my couch and predict what the plays are. Slant to Odell. Draw to Perkins. CREATIVITY MATTERS. McAdoo was given the credit for fixing eli but it was Odell. Let’s see how McAdoo does without the kid with the yellow hair who got him the job in the first place. He should be fired today. He may be a nice guy, but he is not ready to be a head coach. Or even an OC. And if I hear he needs “to look in the mirror” one more time I’m gonna kill someone. The overall point is offense in the NFL is about creativity and the Giants offense has none. Now to the defense. If you told me before the year that the Giants offense was bad I would’ve believed you. But to say that the defense is worse then the offense. I wouldve laughed. The defense was awesome last year and brought back 10 of the starters. So what has happened? Landon Collins, JPP, and Vernon have all regressed to say the least. Their has been no pass rush, and Eli Apple has been completely exposed for what he is. A bust. Another one for star GM Jerry Reece, who tried to buy his defense instead of drafting well. Ughhh. This whole season has been a complete joke and embarrassment. The roster isn’t good, the coaches can’t develop the players, and the players can’t execute. And to top it off, the only player who gives any sort of hope just had a major injury. So where do we go from here?
To say this year has been a disappointing one would be an understatement. But is there hope? I’m here to say there is. This might be exactly what they need. Eli is on his way out. Maybe this is the year they get the QB of the future. Despite the heartbreak this year has caused, having eli pass the torch to let’s say sam darnold, and not having to wait years for a new QB could be worth a horrible year. Overall, I think the Giants just need a full rebuild. This year has been a huge slap in the face to the organization and the fans. We need a change.
